Convalescing in the workhouse as I got better, Mother began to take me out in a wheelchair. It was spring, and I began to get to know the workhouse and the people better.

In this picture that's me in the middle, with Mother pushing me. We are going past a First World War veteran with one leg, and another with his arm off at the elbow. A sad business, to fight for your country, lose a limb and end up in a workhouse. On the left, Matron is giving orders to her staff. There's a mother with a new- born baby in a pram, and another convalescing child, a girl, being encouraged on to the grass by her mother
