Frank writes in his book 'A Brush With Life', “The cruel coalman Mother knew one other family in Birmingham. Mother's employers, the Newtons, made the arrangements. So we were taken in by Mr and Mrs Baker, at number 54, Golden Hillock Road. Somehow Mother knew Mr Baker from years before down in Ramsgate. It seemed like we'd be there for a long time. It was September now, and I began school. One day out in the road I was watching a horse pulling a heavy coal-cart. Near the crossroads the horse got stubborn and stopped, blocking the road. The coal-man began to lay into the horse with his whip. The horse reared up, and I felt sorry for it. I was only eleven, but I got really cross with the man. 'Stop that! It's cruel!' 'Buzz off, you little bugger, or I'll put this whip round your backside. ‘Bully!' The man raised his whip at me, and used bad language. I got frightened and ran back to the Bakers. Next time I looked, the cart had gone.
